Canopy

This chapter will be the cutting, building and fitting of the canopy on the fuselage. So far this has been the most time consuming and nerve racking part of the project.

I purchased the smoked canopy from The Airplane Factory in July 1980! I kept it in the original shipping box and moved it from Kansas to Arizona. When I opened the box last summer I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleased to see it was perfect! I worked up the nerve to cut the back portion off and began the build up process last fall.

For the Canopy Stay I used a Sachs gas charge airlift. I purchased this from Pep Boys and the model number is SG426001. The airlift is fully extended when the canopy is closed as well as when it is open. It applies pressure to keep the canopy closed and open.
